How to Pray

A simple guide to talking with God, even when it feels difficult or when He seems silent.

Prayer is our response to God: adoration, confession, thanksgiving, lament, and asking for the needs of others and ourselves. It does not require impressive vocabulary or a particular emotional experience. Christians pray to the Father through the Son, trusting that Jesus Christ has opened the way for us to approach God with confidence. Whether you are exploring faith for the first time, returning after a long absence, or living through a season when God seems silent, prayer can feel intimidating.

At Holy Cross, prayer belongs to the historic Christian "cure of souls": the Church’s work of discipleship and spiritual formation for body, mind, and soul. Some Christians have been taught to measure prayer by emotional intensity or by whether they receive a private word from God. When that experience does not come, they may feel abandoned. Historic Anglican practice offers a steadier gift: the Church teaches us to pray with Scripture, with one another, and through seasons of both consolation and silence. Prayer is not a performance. Within this whole-person rule of life, the Daily Office and Church Calendar order our time, Holy Communion nourishes us, confession restores us to truth, fasting disciplines desire, service turns us toward our neighbor, and responsible care of sleep, diet, and exercise helps sustain our embodied lives.

Note: The historic cure of souls offers pastoral care and spiritual formation. It is not meant to replace a doctor, and any medical concerns or decisions about diet, supplements, or clinical counseling should be discussed with a qualified medical or mental-health professional.

A Shared Rule of Prayer

The Church’s shared rule of prayer teaches us how to pray together rather than leaving each person to invent a private method. When Jesus’ disciples asked him how to pray, he gave them a specific pattern: the Lord’s Prayer. It is the perfect place to start:

  • Acknowledge God: "Our Father, who art in heaven..."
  • Align with His Will: "Thy kingdom come, thy will be done..."
  • Ask for Needs: "Give us this day our daily bread..."
  • Seek Forgiveness: "Forgive us our trespasses..."
  • Ask for Protection: "Lead us not into temptation..."

We also pray the Psalms and use the historic Book of Common Prayer. These resources give us faithful words when our own words fail, connecting our personal prayers to the worship of the universal Church.

Providence: When God Seems Silent

Almost every Christian experiences seasons where God feels distant or prayers seem unanswered. It is important to know that:

Silence is not necessarily a sign of weak faith.

The Psalms are full of faithful people crying out, "How long, O Lord?" Lamenting to God is a profound act of faith.

God answers in His wisdom.

Sometimes His answer is "no," or "wait," because He sees a larger picture that we cannot see.

Persistence matters.

Jesus taught us to continue praying and not lose heart, trusting that God hears us and loves us.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to pray out loud?

No. God hears the silent prayers of your heart just as clearly as spoken words.

Does prayer actually change things?

Christians pray because God invites us to ask and Scripture bears witness that prayer matters. But prayer is not a technique for controlling God or guaranteeing the outcome we want. In prayer, we place real needs before God, entrust the outcome to his wisdom, and are ourselves formed in trust, repentance, love, and perseverance.
