What Is the Meaning of Life?
A Christian answer rooted in the God who created us and the Christ who redeems us.
If you are searching for meaning, our culture usually offers two paths: invent it yourself, or earn it through success. The Christian faith offers a completely different answer. The meaning of life is to receive life from God, to know and love him, and to love our neighbors in the life Jesus Christ gives.
Meaning is not a status we earn or a personal brand we build. It begins with the God who created us, seeks us when we are lost, and calls us into a faithful life with his people. At Holy Cross, we understand this through the historic Christian "cure of souls": the Church’s work of discipleship and spiritual formation for the whole person—body, mind, and soul. Many Christians have known sincere faith mainly as a private relationship with God, an emotional experience, or self-directed Bible study. Those gifts can be real, but they are not the whole of Christian life. The historic Church adds a shared, sacramental, and accountable way of being formed in Christ.
A Shared Rule of Life
If your spiritual life has felt isolated, improvised, or dependent on how you feel, the historic Church offers a steadier pattern. Meaning is not just a theory to agree with or an emotion to manufacture. It is lived through a shared rule of life grounded in the Bible and practiced in the Church:
The Daily Office and Church Calendar:
We order our time and shape our worldview through regular prayer and the seasons of the Christian year.
Holy Communion:
We do not invent our own spiritual path; we are nourished by God's grace at his Table.
Confession and Fasting:
We receive pastoral counsel, repent of destructive habits, and discipline our desires so we can live in truth.
Service and Stewardship:
We serve our neighbors and honor God by responsibly caring for our physical bodies—including diet, exercise, and sleep—because they affect our spiritual and relational health.
Note: The historic cure of souls offers pastoral care and spiritual formation. It is not meant to replace a doctor, and any medical concerns or decisions about diet, supplements, or clinical counseling should be discussed with a qualified medical or mental-health professional.
Providence: Trusting God's Care
Many people worry that finding God's will requires decoding a secret, personalized blueprint for every decision. But God gives us something better: his Word, the wisdom of the Church, prayer, and ordinary responsibilities through which we learn faithful judgment.
Trusting God’s providence means entrusting ourselves to his wise care even when circumstances are confusing. It does not require calling evil good or pretending that suffering makes sense. Our purpose is usually lived through faithfulness in the ordinary places where God has put us, supported by the pastoral care of a local parish.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does God have a specific plan for my life?
Scripture clearly reveals God’s purposes for every Christian: to trust Christ, grow in holiness, love our neighbors, and serve faithfully. It does not promise that every career, relationship, or location choice will be disclosed through a private message. Christians make many decisions through biblical wisdom, prayer, counsel, circumstances, and responsible freedom.
How do I find my purpose when life is hard?
Suffering can obscure our sense of purpose. Christianity does not promise an easy life, but it does promise that God is present with us in our pain. Even in suffering, our lives have profound meaning because we belong to a God who suffered for us and promises to redeem all things.
